This parallel political biography of two U.S. senators -- Paul
Sarbanes of Maryland (a liberal democrat) and Richard Lugar of
Indiana (a conservative Republican) -- offers a narrative of
American politics during the last quarter century. By displaying
the opposing political stances of two mainstream senators who are
alike in age, education, career changes, and other attributes,
Professor Lamb shows how "reasonable disagreement" can lead to
unreasonable consequences: how a Congress pursuing its
Constitutional duties can produce policy stalemate and voter
alienation.
What would you do if your daughter, off to Mesopotamia on an
archaeological dig for an unspecified period of time, made you
guardian of a tousled, obstinate, intractable dog? Such was the
dilemma of George Preble Watson, a man struggling with the death of
his beloved wife and failing grades in dog deportment. Hoping
somehow that sympathy for his grave-site grieving would make the
animal more tractable, George took the dog on regular visits to the
cemetery. At times as he recounted to the silence all that he and
his wife had shared, he'd be overcome with sobbing while the dog
lay impassive nearby. In more tranquil moments George was quick to
reward the dog's infrequent obedience, but as soon as one prank was
neutralized another was introduced. The resolution of this standoff
is thrown into crisis as both discover that love, even for man and
dog, is a work in progress.

Text, Context and the Johannine Community adopts a new approach to
the social context of the Johannine writings by drawing on modern
sociolinguistic theory. Sociolinguistics emphasizes language as a
social phenomenon, which can be analysed with reference not only to
its broad context of culture, but also, through the use of register
analysis, to its narrower context of situation. The Johannine
writings have increasingly been seen as the product of a distinct
Johannine Community, depicted by some scholars as a sectarian
group, opposed both to wider Jewish society and to other Christian
groups. This model has largely been constructed on
historical-critical grounds, yet given our lack of reliable
external information about the origin of the Johannine writings, a
more fruitful approach may be to examine their lexico-grammatical
and discourse features to determine what these imply about
interpersonal relationships. This study compares selected
'narrative asides' from the Gospel of John with a passage section
from 1 John and with the two shorter Johannine Epistles. It
concludes that register analysis of these texts does not support
the idea of a close-knit sectarian group.

On a dreary day in the late nineteenth century, seventeen year old
Moses Morganstern left home in Poland for America. Within hours of
disembarking at the land of the free, he witnessed shocking acts of
greed and swindling, exploiting the defenseless. Hoping the
episodes were transient blemishes in the American character, he
surveyed a broader cross section of the people to justify his
vision of the land's goodness. Sadly he found cheating and
persecution even among groups of the same nationality and
occupation. Searching for a job with a mercantile business company
he was pronounced unemployable by the German/Jewish owners because
he spoke with a Yiddish dialect. Undeterred, he quickly identified
an unserved market and began selling sewing notions door-to-door.
Success followed success, but none hushed the inner voice demanding
he find his true purpose. The persistence of his call to start on
his journey never accompanied by any hint of departure nor
direction, nor distance nor destination stalked him like his shadow
and he realized there would never be anything definitive except he
must go.

WHO IS A PROPHET, AND WHAT IS HIS MISSION? "The prophet is God's
policeman on duty to reprove, rebuke, and exhort in the name of God
and righteousness. The prophet is not famous, and his voice is the
one crying in the wilderness of life. He is sold out to God, and
the word 'compromise' is not known to him. He is one-way traffic on
the highway of God." This intriguing and fascinating publication
brings to light the scriptural sketch of who a genuine prophet of
God should be. It describes his characteristics. It discloses vital
lessons from his walk with God and also examines his mode of
operation. When the Israelites (the church) wandered away from God
and gave themselves to idolatry and false religion, God sent His
prophets to confront the situation. It's a late hour on God's
watch, and He is sending His prophets today "to make ready a people
prepared for the Lord" (Luke 1:17). ELIJAH ANUOLUWAPO LAMB was born
in England but grew up in Nigeria, where he was exposed to the
church life from a young age by his mother. He made a conscious
decision in August 1998 to accept Jesus Christ as his personal Lord
and Saviour. Yet, he didn't fully commit his life to the Lord until
he had a major encounter with the Holy Spirit on August 23, 2007.
He found himself laughing uncontrollably during morning prayers
with a family he met upon his return to England. Since then, Elijah
has had a full-blown passion for God and service to His church. He
and his wife, Yvonne, continue the ministry of Christ in England
with their daughter, Hannah.
